Question: Can anybody tell me about the WOW SIGNAL found by SETI?
Just Curious

Answer:

Answer by Martin
There’s not much to it. Back in the ’70s a radio telescope recorded an anomalous burst within a sector of the sky. No one was even there when it happened; it was found after the fact when someone surveyed the data. It was consistent with the criteria figured out for a signal from E.T., but it was never found again. Without replication it’s just an anomaly.

Have SETI ever picked up a signal?

Answer:

Answer by Tony W
They have never picked up anything conclusive, though they had that Wow factor some decades ago. Not sure if it was fully explained but if they do find conclusive evidence it would be headline news around the world. Don’t hold your breath….

Question: About how long did it take for the famous 1977 “WOW!” SETI signal to reach Earth from the origin point?
Roughly 2.5 degrees south of Chi Sagittarii. Don’t know the “Z” axis.
Roughly 2.5 degrees south of Chi Sagittarii. Come on, guys. That’s good enough for “X” and “Y”. And I bloody well know that I need a “Z”, but I don’t have it. Help!

That depends on how far away it came from. The coordinate you gave is only one coordinate; we need three to define a position in space.

Question: Why have we yet to discover an extraterrestrial signal with SETI or any other means?
Could it be that we aren’t listening in the right way, or that other intelligent life is not broadcasting, or that the lifespan of an intellegent race is very short? Could it just be that we’re all alone in the Milky Way?

Answer:

Answer by blitzkrieg_hatf6
due to the porcessing power required… seti looks at things for a little period and moves on to hunt more, its like focussing on a grain of sand in the sahara desert a second….
