Question: I can’t reach Seti@home web site. Anyone knows why?
There was no problem like 1 year ago, but for the last couple of months, it has been out of reach. Is it just me or is there a problem with the server itself?
I’ve even tried the backdoor, all i get is a white blank page… Maybe the site is banned in my country for some reason -as they have done with youtube-. Any solutions to work my way around would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Q6600, and I want to help, but I can’t help but think it will hurt or shorten my CPU’s life because it’s constantly at 100% when running. Will running seti@home hurt my CPU’s life?

Unless you have other problems like it’s filthy and over heating it’s not going to hurt your cpu. I ran it for years before I got a laptop and turned my computer off all the time.

Isn’t seti short for Search of Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence? If you have the program, check the details of your computer if it has enough disk space to run the program.

Question: Seti@Home Screensaver Question?
So, I’ve been running Seti at home for about 6 months now and have already garnered about 2000 points. And occasionally, I like to watch the pretty screensaver and watch the red columns rise and fall. However, a couple days ago a few of my tallest red columns were capped with a green color. Very unusual and I’ve never seen it happen before. I checked FAQs and can’t find anything. Anyone have any idea what that means?

I run SETI and also another 3 projects. I disabled the screensaver and just go to “blank”. When you run other projects, the screensaver goes to the one for that project so I cannot check for you as my computer is working for climate prediction at the moment.
I do know that SETI has an excellent forum so I would suggest you ask there.

SETI collects information at a faster rate than it can be processed. To date their have been no signals with a high figure of merit that have not found to be from explainable sources. But much of the data is unprocessed.
Also, the amount of space that SETI has been able to investigate is infinitesimal. There is nowhere near enough data to say the program is a success.

Probably not.
First of all, you have to realize that each computer gets just a tiny bit of data to work on, and each bit of data is worked on by at least two computers. If anything interesting is found, it won’t be tracked back to all of the different machines that worked on it. You just get the satisfaction of knowing that you have been part of the solution. And you do get credit for the amount of computing you have done, and can print a pretty certificate.
Question: Is SETI@Home an environmental catastrophe?
OK I once tried SETI@home until I got my next utility bill, and realized that running my computer full speed 24/7 was costing me $ 30 a month. Is SETI@home the cause of global warming? Doesn’t it waste enough electricity every year to power all of France? All to find aliens who aren’t at home? Should it be banned by some kind of international treaty?

Numerous people I know run SETI@home on their computers and none have ever seen any increase in their energy bills. None.
