Question: I can’t reach Seti@home web site. Anyone knows why?
There was no problem like 1 year ago, but for the last couple of months, it has been out of reach. Is it just me or is there a problem with the server itself?
I’ve even tried the backdoor, all i get is a white blank page… Maybe the site is banned in my country for some reason -as they have done with youtube-. Any solutions to work my way around would be greatly appreciated.

Question: Does anyone run seti@home?
Have you ever had a weird or unusual signal?
Do Seti inform you if they find a worthwhile signal in one of your units?

Probably not.
First of all, you have to realize that each computer gets just a tiny bit of data to work on, and each bit of data is worked on by at least two computers. If anything interesting is found, it won’t be tracked back to all of the different machines that worked on it. You just get the satisfaction of knowing that you have been part of the solution. And you do get credit for the amount of computing you have done, and can print a pretty certificate.
Question: Anyone who worked for SETI or Planetary Sci Inst? Or had soft money research grants?
These are called soft money positions. They are pure research positions (you work as a Research Scientist instead of a prof) and are paid through grant money.
Ex:
www.psi.edu
www.spacescience.org
www.swri.org
And I think they are cool

If you work for SETI, you sure as shit aren’t paid through grant money.

Question: Has anyone set their mind on SETI?
SETI has been searching for radio signals in space for many decades now. From a Scientific point of view and based on it success (or lack of) – is this considered a worth while endeavor to continue or is it a waste of time?
Answer:
Answer by Roy H
From a scientific point of view SETI is pretty much a worthless endeavor, unless we did make contact with some advanced civilization capable of getting around the speed-of-light speed limit and so could give us some invaluable knowledge such as a cure for cancer.
Personally, even if all we do is confirm that there’s some one out there it would be one of the most profound, Earth-shattering events in the history of our species.
Question: Does anyone else think that the SETI program is retarded?
Does anyone else think that the SETI program, or that program designed to look for habitable earth-like planets are absurd?
I’m not saying that they aren’t legitimate curiosities, or that they may not yeald results, but that they are a complete wast of monetary resources. Don’t we have enough problems here than to be worrying about aliens and alien planets? Do you even think it’s a good idea to be looking for such things? Could contacting an alien species make things worse, is it worth the time, money, and risk? Maybe there on the far end of the universe for a reason. As far as earth-like planets, we have enough trouble try to stop asian bird flu comming over from another continent, imagine disease comming from another planet. Oh shit! The fact is; it’s a lot of money to curb a somewhat childish curiousity, and I’m sure there are plenty of ways to improve useful technology without having to spend billions looking for aliens. Did anyone see Alien, yeah fuck that.
Okay 4 million dollars, but hasn’t science fiction taught us not to fuck with aliens?
Imagine everyone pitched in 2 cents to make that 4 million and we fed the hungry, stopped a war, dicovered a new energy source, or gave it to that guy who dissagrees with me an a dozen others.

I do, I think the search is fruitless and in vain. I rather let my computer chew on more important data such as the BBC Global Climate Experiment at http://bbc.cpdn.org/index.php
The data and results are of more use to mankind.
Question: Sony Wega CRT 51″ rear-projection TV – is brighter on the top and bottom edges – Can I fix this?? Anyone?
Our Sony Wega CRT 51″ rear-projection TV is brighter on the top and bottom of the screen. The areas that are brighter seem to be where the black strips are when you’re playing a widescreen movie. The middle of the screen looks more of a light yellowish. (Not exactly sure which is the right color, im thinking the brighter edges are). We’ve played around and adjusted the colors/brightness/hue etc, but its still very annoying to the people who know its there. Is there any way to fix this? The TV is no more than 2 years old, and it was only used to watch movies here and there.

Answer by Edward B
Do you use the set very much without the letterbox in the picture? If not, those areas are where the letterbox has been black. This will appear to be brighter than the rest of the screen, since these areas have not been used as much as the center of the screen.
If that is indeed, the trouble, there is nothing, short of replacing all three CRTs, to correct this problem.
EDIT:
Forget everything I said about a CRT, your set has none. You are in need of a light engine.
Blue and yellow strips in the picture, this describes a failure of the engine. I answered your off group question in great detail, so I’ll dispense with all that here.
I did forget to mention, You could try removing the lamp (after letting it cool down). Check to make sure the face of the lamp is clean, and the lens inside where the lamp shines into, is clean, as well. If the lens is dirty, clean it with a mild soap, and let it dry completely. it goes without saying, unplug the set before doing any of this.
I hope I helped!

You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32) Jesus is the Truth. UFO’s are demons who deceive and confuse the world in order to keep people away from the Truth. Read your bible. Have a good day. God Bless
