The Global Positioning Satellite System (GPS system) is a worldwide navigation system consisting of 25 operational satellites controlled and financed by the US Department of Defense which constantly transmit position and timing information towards earth. Sophisticated advanced GPS equipment is required for the reception and interpretation of the information. Location is determined by the triangulation of distances between the vehicles and the satellites. Please refer to the AVL section on this page for specific applications of GPS.
